Why Color Matching Matters

When working with multiple cameras, differences in sensors, color science, and settings can lead to inconsistent footage. This inconsistency can disrupt the visual flow of your project and complicate the color grading process. ColorClone Studio addresses this challenge by allowing you to create precise camera matches, ensuring a seamless visual experience.

What is ColorClone Studio?

ColorClone Studio is a web-based application that lets you create custom camera matching LUTs (Lookup Tables) for virtually any camera. Unlike our ColorClone Plug-In, which has a fixed library of supported cameras, ColorClone Studio gives you the flexibility to match cameras that aren't in our existing library using the same advanced machine learning algorithms we use in-house.

Key Features

  • Infinite Flexibility: Use any camera and any color chart—even custom ones you design yourself.

  • Advanced Machine Learning: Leverage our sophisticated algorithms to process thousands of data points for accurate matches.

  • User-Friendly Interface: An intuitive web UI that securely saves your data, accessible from any device.

  • High-Resolution 3D LUTs: Generate LUTs with resolutions of 17x17x17, 33x33x33, or 65x65x65 for unparalleled color accuracy.

  • Iterative Workflow: Easily refine your matches by adding more color samples and reprocessing as needed.

How Does It Work?

Step 1: Shoot Your Camera Tests

Capture over-under exposure tests by shooting an exposure sweep of your desired color chart with both cameras under the same lighting conditions. Typically, we recommend shooting from -5 to +5 stops of a gray card and color charts.

  • File Formats: Export single stills as .EXR, .PNG, .TIFF, or .JPEG files.

  • Resolution: High resolutions aren't necessary; 1920x1080 pixels is sufficient.

Step 2: Upload Your Camera Tests

Upload your single-frame stills into ColorClone Studio. The application automatically sorts your stills based on luminosity, simplifying the process.

Step 3: Select Color Coordinates

Define which color charts you want to use by placing markers at the corners of each chart.

  • Custom Color Charts: Use any color chart—even ones you've printed yourself.

  • Multiple Grids: Sample multiple charts or specific areas to focus on skin tones or other important colors.

  • Flexibility: You're not limited to standard charts; the system adapts to your needs.

Step 4: Create Your Camera Match

Once your samples are set:

  1. Select Your Source and Target Cameras: Choose the camera you're starting with and the one you want to match to.

  2. Choose LUT Resolution: Select from 17³, 33³, or 65³ resolutions. For most cases, 33³ is sufficient.

  3. Generate the LUT: Click "Create Match" and let our machine learning model process the data.

Step 5: Download and Apply Your LUT

After processing, download your custom LUT as a .cube file. This LUT can be applied in any software that supports cube files, such as DaVinci Resolve, Adobe Premiere Pro, or Photoshop.

Step 6: Test and Iterate

Your first LUT might not be perfect, and that's okay.

  • Iterative Process: Add more color samples or adjust your selections to improve accuracy.

  • Easy Updates: Simply reprocess with the new data to generate an updated LUT.

Real-World Application: Testing in DaVinci Resolve

We tested our custom LUT in DaVinci Resolve to see the results firsthand.

  1. Import Footage: We brought in footage from both the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K and the Sony Venice 2.

  2. Apply the LUT: After importing the LUT into DaVinci Resolve, we applied it to the Blackmagic footage.

  3. Comparison: The transformed Blackmagic footage closely matched the Sony Venice 2 footage, showcasing the effectiveness of the LUT.

  4. Color Grading: We added the standard Sony Rec.709 LUT on top to finalize the look.

Before and After:

  • Without LUT: The Blackmagic footage had noticeable differences in color and tone compared to the Sony Venice 2.

  • With LUT: The colors aligned closely, and the footage looked consistent across both cameras.

Beyond Video: Applications in Photography

ColorClone Studio isn't limited to video—you can also use it for photography.

  • Film Stock Matching: Shoot still frames of your favorite film stocks (e.g., Portra 400) and create a profile.

  • Software Compatibility: Apply the generated LUT in Lightroom or Photoshop to achieve the desired film look.

  • Flexibility: Use the LUT across various software platforms that support .cube files.
